• Galaxy Quest : A Novel - The best spoof of the decade! As it begins, Arthur Dent is just your average Brit, whose best friend (Ford Prefect) just happens to be an alien reporter for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. As it turns out, Earth was slated for demolition by the Vogons to make way for their new intergalactic highway, and Ford was able to save himself and Arthur by "hitching" a ride on the Vogon spaceship that blasted the Earth. • Red Dwarf : Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers - This book is an absolute masterpiece! Here's the premace: Lister drinks way too much, and finds himself orbiting Jupiter signing up for a seven year stint in the space-corps. Little does he know it'll be the last time he'll see anyone. Put in temporal isolation for disobeying orders, he's revived three million years later, and the crew's been dead almost the entire time due to a massive accident. It turns out he's the last human alive, and his companions are a hologram and a relatively intelligent cat that's evolved from his pet kittens. It's not often you come across a book that can be cool, clever, imaginative, sensitive and hilarious all at once. But Grant and Naylor are sublime craftsmen of characterization, invention, language and comic timing. Some wonderful moments include Rimmer's bizarre revision techniques, Lister lost-puppy love for Kochanski, and a heartbreaking chapter describing Krytens blind servitude for the long dead Nova 5 crew. But more than anything else, the ending is wonderful. It is perfectly unexpected and bitter-sweet. The last sentence will give you goose-bumps. Grab it on Paperback

• Red Dwarf VIII : The Official Book - This large hardcover book consists mostly of the scripts to the 8 episodes in series 8. The scripts include the original lines that were (unfortunately) dropped from the show, tons of wonderful photos, and best of all, a wonderful introduction by Doug Naylor. If you are a fan of the show, this will probably make you snarf (if you happen to be drinking.) If you aren't a fan of the show and someone just reads a passage to you, you will probably still crack up. Naylor explains why Red Dwarf 8 was almost never made, and why Kochanski was introduced.
